Thomas Millar was born in 1783, the son of William Millar, a grain merchant, and Margaret Hart. He was a flour miller at Garscube Mills at New Kilpatrick near Glasgow when he married
Jean Mitchell in 1809. They had five
daughters and two sons. Thomas died in 1849.
